Privacy policy

Last updated:

This policy explains what TechDug collects, why, and when it is deleted. The short answer: very little, for as short a time as we can manage.

Summary

  • No cookies for readers, no analytics, no ads and no tracking pixels.
  • Commenting needs a name and the comment, nothing more.
  • Contact messages are kept for 90 days, only so we can answer them.
  • Web server access logs are deleted after about two weeks.
  • We do not sell personal data or pass it to advertisers.

Reading the site

You can read every page without an account. Readers get no cookies, and the pages contain no analytics or third-party scripts.

Our web server keeps standard access logs, as nearly every server does: IP address, the page requested, the browser’s user agent and the time. We use them for security and to keep the service running. They are rotated and deleted after about two weeks.

When you send a comment or a contact message, the site uses your IP address for a moment to limit spam. This happens in memory; the address is not saved in the site’s database.

Comments

The comment form asks for a name and the comment itself. There is no email field. Any name is fine.

New comments wait for a moderator. Once approved, a comment is shown publicly under its post with the name and date. Comments that are never approved are deleted automatically after 30 days.

The contact form

The contact form collects your name, your email address, the topic you choose and your message. We use them only to read and answer your request and to act on it. Messages are deleted automatically after 90 days.

Authors

Authors join by invitation. An author’s public profile (name, handle, portrait, short bio and optional website link) and published posts are visible to everyone by design. Authors can ask for any post, or their whole blog, to be removed.

Cookies

The site sets one cookie, and only for administrators: a session cookie created when they sign in, so the site knows they are signed in. Readers and commenters get no cookies.

Third-party requests

Some files are delivered by other providers. When your browser downloads them, the provider receives your IP address and browser information, as with any request on the web:

  • Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com) delivers the typefaces used across the site.
  • Unsplash (images.unsplash.com) delivers the photographs on the home page.

Those requests are covered by the providers’ own privacy policies. No other outside service receives data about your visit. The site uses HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt certificates, so traffic between your browser and the site is encrypted.

What we do not do

  • No reader profiles, and no following people from page to page or across sites.
  • No advertising, so there is no one to sell attention or data to.
  • No mailing lists: commenters never give us an email address in the first place.

Your requests

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for a correction, or ask for deletion, for example of a comment you posted or a message you sent. Use the contact page and choose Privacy request, with enough detail for us to find the item, such as the post and the name you used. We may ask a question to confirm the request is yours.

Changes

If the way we handle data changes, this page and its “last updated” date will change with it. We will not start collecting anything new without describing it here first.
