Troubleshooting
Do I have to sign in to read anything?
No. Published posts are public and cost nothing to read. Accounts exist only for invited authors and for the people who moderate the site.
A code block overflows the screen. Bug?
Working as intended. Code keeps its original line breaks so that what you copy is exactly what the author wrote. Wide blocks scroll horizontally inside their own box: swipe or scroll within the block to reach the end of the line.
I have JavaScript turned off. What breaks?
Nothing essential. Pages are plain HTML and CSS. Scripts only add conveniences: the copy button on code blocks, and posting a comment without a page reload.
I posted a comment and it is not there.
Expected. Every guest comment enters a review queue and is shown only after a moderator approves it. If it is never approved, it is removed automatically once 30 days have passed.
Following and browsing
How do I follow a single author?
Subscribe to /handle/feed.xml in any RSS reader; the link is on the author’s blog page. For everyone at once, use /feed.xml instead.
What is a topic page?
A list built from tags. Any post tagged with a given word appears at /tags/name/ next to every other post with the same tag, across all authors. The tags under a post link straight to their topic pages.
Commenting
How do I leave a comment?
- Scroll to the bottom of the post.
- Enter a name and your comment.
- Submit.
That is the whole procedure. You do not create an account, and the form never asks for an email address.
Can I edit or remove my comment?
Not directly, since there is no account to sign in to. Open the contact page, select Data / privacy request, and give us the post and the name you commented under. We will take the comment down.
Authoring
How do I get an author account?
By invitation only; there is no public registration form. Send a note through the contact page with the topic Request author access and describe what you plan to write. Every request is read, though not every one leads to an invitation.
What does an author blog include?
- A page at your handle with portrait, short bio and an optional link to your website
- A “start here” introduction and categories you name yourself
- Posts with cover images, inline images, code blocks, tags, and a table of contents when they run long
- An RSS feed of your own
The complete inventory is on the stack page.
Who holds the rights to my posts?
You do. Publishing only grants the site permission to host, display and distribute them, RSS feeds included. You can have a single post or the entire blog removed whenever you like.
Can posts link to my own site or repository?
Yes. Your blog page has room for a link to your website, and links inside posts are normal links. Pointing readers to documentation, repositories and sources is encouraged.
Reports and data requests
Something here breaks the rules. How do I flag it?
On the contact page, select Flag a post or comment, paste the URL and say in a line what is wrong with it. If the problem is that your own work was copied, select Copyright claim instead.
What do you store about me, and can I get it removed?
Select Data / privacy request on the contact page to ask for a copy, a correction or deletion. The privacy page lists each thing we keep and its retention period.
Can I reach you by email or phone instead?
No. The contact form is the only channel. Messages go to the site’s own inbox, and an answer comes back by email if your message calls for one.
