Reading
Do I need an account to read posts?
No. All published posts are public and free to read. Accounts exist only for invited authors and the people who moderate the site.
How do I follow one author?
Add their feed to an RSS reader. The address is /handle/feed.xml, and it is linked from the author’s blog page. To follow every author at once, use /feed.xml.
What is a topic page?
When authors tag a post, it is listed on a topic page at /topic/name/ with every other post carrying the same tag, whoever wrote it. Click any tag under a post to open its topic.
A code block runs off the edge of my screen. Is that a bug?
No. Code keeps its original line breaks so it can be copied exactly. Wide blocks scroll sideways on their own; swipe or scroll inside the block to see the rest of the line.
Does the site work without JavaScript?
Yes. Pages are plain HTML and CSS. JavaScript only adds conveniences, such as the copy button on code blocks and sending a comment without reloading the page.
Comments
How do I comment on a post?
Scroll to the end of the post, type a name and your comment, and press the button. There is no account to create, and we never ask for your email address.
My comment is not showing. What happened?
Comments are held for review. It appears once a moderator approves it. Comments that are not approved are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Can I edit or delete a comment I wrote?
Not by yourself, because there is no account to sign in to. Use the contact page, choose Privacy request, and tell us the post and the name you used. We will take it down.
Writing on TechDug
How do I become an author?
Author accounts are by invitation only, and there is no public sign-up form. If you would like to write here, use the contact page with the topic Writing here and tell us what you would write about. We read every request but cannot promise an invitation.
What comes with an author blog?
- A blog page at your handle with portrait, short bio and an optional website link
- A “start here” introduction and categories you name
- Posts with cover images, inline images, code blocks, tags and a table of contents on long posts
- An RSS feed of your own
See features for the full list.
Who owns the posts I publish?
You do. Publishing gives the site permission to host, display and distribute your posts, for example in RSS feeds. You can ask us to remove a single post or your whole blog at any time.
Can I link to my own site or project?
Yes. Your blog page can show a link to your website, and links inside posts are ordinary links. Linking to documentation, repositories and sources is encouraged.
Reports and data
How do I report a post or a comment?
Use the contact page and pick Report a post or comment. Include the link and a sentence about the problem. If someone copied your work, pick Copyright instead.
How do I ask what data you hold about me?
Pick Privacy request on the contact page. You can ask for a copy, a correction or deletion. The privacy policy lists everything we keep and for how long.
Is there an email address or a phone number?
No. The contact page is the only channel. Messages land in the site’s own inbox and we answer by email when an answer is needed.
