A new leak, which is fairly reliable, suggests that the next Assassin’s Creed will take place in a fan-desired location, unrelated to known projects.
Assassin’s Creed celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year, although it hasn’t all been good news. The community is celebrating with several online posts, while Ubisoft has announced that several older AC games will be shutting down with online services. It’s been a mixed bag, but Ubi will be turning away from the past and revealing the franchise’s future in September.
Prior to this, there are approximately four projects that are claimed, reported and/or confirmed to be in development. There is Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a confirmed live service project in development; there’s Assassin’s Creed Nexus, a reported VR game in development; there’s Assassin’s Creed Rift, a smaller game featuring Basim, which is reportedly in development; and there are rumors of an AC1 Remake. However, the latest rumor may be key in what fans think is going on at Ubisoft.
Jeremy Penter, aka ACG, has made a quick and easy post saying that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be “Aztecs”. It’s short, sweet and to the point, and while all rumors and leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, ACG has been right about Ubisoft projects like Far Cry Primal in the past. But without more context, it’s very hard to see how this fits into the grand scheme of things.
On the one hand, it should be noted that Aztecs, the city of Tenochtitlan and Mesoamerica in general have been popular demands of fans for years. It’s up there with a Japanese Assassin’s Creed game in the hopes and desires of fans, so it’s possible that this is just an extension of that, depending on how ACG got this information. Then again, if you are to believe it, it could seriously rearrange what fans think is coming from Ubi, as the key word here is “next”.
AC Infinity may launch earlier than expected and this Aztec setting may be part of the launch. But given what little is known about the project, it seems unlikely. Many thought that Assassin’s Creed Rift would be the next project, but it was said that Basim would be set in Baghdad. This could theoretically mean the next Assassin’s Creed game in the open world, and/or it could mean there’s another project that no one knew was in development.
It’s hard to say what fans should do with this information. Ultimately, the best bet is to put it away and wait and see what Ubisoft reveals for Assassin’s Creed in September.
Assassin’s Creed Rift is reportedly in development.
