July Update for Rust Balances Combat, Optimizes Loading, And More

In recent years there has been an explosion of online survival games. Titles such as DayZ, 7 Days To Die and Rust not only pit players against each other, but also against the environment. Speaking of the latter, Facepunch Studio’s notoriously ruthless release is regarded as one of the most influential survival games out there, along with those from Minecraft and No Man’s Sky. It may be difficult, but there are apparently fans who appreciate its punishing factor, and the developer updates the game consistently.

The latest patch for Rust has recently gone live, with a number of tweaks and quality of life changes being made. Perhaps the biggest update, according to a post on Steam, is combat balancing. Listening to player feedback, Facepunch modified the gunfight in a number of ways to meet fan expectations. An example of this is reducing the fuse time of the grenade, which is now 2.5 seconds. A few of the weapons, such as the M249, have been made more “aggressive”, while the shotgun bullets have been modified to make it more suitable for medium-range combat.

While guns and other weapons in Rust are a key factor in the gameplay, there is more to the world. One of the other things that the July patch improves upon is the loading time. Anyone who has played the game can vouch for how long it takes to load into a game. The post on Steam says there have been some optimizations such as the “Asset Warmup” phase now starting in the background. There have also been some quality of life changes, as well as improving the process of reporting “problematic content” in the game, which includes the implementation of a report section for objectionable content.

The June Rust update also saw changes to the gunfight, and apparently the studio has taken what players have said and used the feedback to make additional changes to the combat for this patch. It shows that the developer is more than willing to listen to fans and make appropriate changes to help the game serve the community well.

Rust is not only influential and fun, but is also known for its difficulty. New players often feel a bit out of their depth as more advanced people come in to kill those who are ill-prepared. It’s not just other players who are concerned either. The essence of the game is to survive, which involves looking for food, building shelter, making clothes and generally not giving in to the harsh realities of the game’s environment.
