After seven years, Blizzard confirms that Heroes of the Storm is officially going into maintenance and that no further content will be added.
heroes of the storm is a bit of a distant memory for many Blizzard fans right now. In 2018, Blizzard downsized the Heroes of the Storm team and announced it would move into what it called a “long-term support” phase. This process included ending esports support for Heroes of the Storm, including the Heroes Global Championship events. Now Blizzard is taking extra steps to phase out Heroes of the Storm support, shifting the game to what Blizzard traditionally refers to as maintenance mode.
Blizzard made the announcement on Friday, July 8, confirming that Heroes of the Storm is being shifted to a state of support that both StarCraft and StarCraft 2 are currently in. What that specifically means is that Heroes of the Storm will provide basic support for current in-game features, such as the hero rotations and season roles. However, no further content is being developed for Heroes of the Storm, so patches will only focus on fixing bugs and adjusting the balance as needed.
No new content also means Heroes of the Storm will no longer receive new microtransaction additions from Blizzard. The Heroes of the Storm store will remain open for those looking to purchase skins and other offerings, but it’s just content that was previously made available. The game as it exists now is how it will continue to exist in the future.
In a bleak revelation, Blizzard said June marked the seventh anniversary of Heroes of the Storm. Other than a celebration among Heroes of the Storm’s most devoted fans, little came of the event. Now, a month later, Blizzard is saying “thank you” to the community for their support.
As a final gift before Heroes of the Storm goes into maintenance mode, all players will receive a free mount. Blizzard will be giving away the “incredibly rare” Epic Arcane Lizard mount. The mount will ship with the patch for Heroes of the Storm players next week. There are no obvious restrictions on who can unlock the mountain or how long it will be available.
At one point, it seemed like Blizzard really wanted to make Heroes of the Storm a MOBA that would compete with League of Legends and Dota 2 as one of the best MOBAs in the world. While it never reached that goal, it’s curious to imagine what Heroes of the Storm might look like today if it got wider development support over the years.
heroes of the storm is now available on PC.
