Google denies rumor that Stadia is shutting down

Google has formally denied the rumor that its Stadia (opens in new tab) gaming service will be shutting down soon and says it is still “working to bring more great games to the platform”.

Stadia, Google’s cloud-based gaming service, has been under some form of deathwatch almost from the start, thanks to confused marketing (opens in new tab) campaigns, notifications of technical problems (opens in new tab)and the absence of some very basic functionality (opens in new tab) at launch. The situation became openly more dire in early 2021, when Stadia’s in-house development studio, led by Jade Raymond, was closed (opens in new tab).

That may at least partly explain why a rumor that ran yesterday on the Killed by Google (opens in new tab) Twitter feed, attributed to an anonymous friend of a regional Google executive, attracted so much attention.

“Long story short, Google is starting with their exit plan,” the post reads. “They didn’t have an exact date for the end of service to happen, but they did say by the end of the summer. He also said they won’t necessarily transfer their services or servers to another league, and it will be a lot as they did with Google Play Music, same exit approach and strategy.”

He also said that all members would be notified 30-60 days in advance and that the last month of the service will be refunded and there will be no charge for using it. Also, all available subscription months will be fully refunded. will be refunded to your linked bank account.”

Like all good rumours, it’s thin and untraceable, but contains just enough detail and connection to the reality on the ground to be believable. Of course it led to many conversations: Many in the Gaming Leaks and Rumors (opens in new tab) subreddit accepted the report as true (and inevitable), while the official Stadia subreddit (opens in new tab) was understandably more questionable. But Stadia said on Twitter that it just isn’t.

Stadia does not close. Rest assured, we’re always working to bring more great games to the platform and Stadia Pro. Let us know if you have any other questions.July 29, 2022

“Stadia will not be shutting down,” the official Stadia account said in response to a user asking if it will be shutting down anytime soon. “Don’t worry, we’re always working to bring more great games to the platform and Stadia Pro.”

That makes it official, and many people I must assume are Stadia owners expressed relief in the replies. But not everyone was convinced:

The doubt is understandable: a Kotaku (opens in new tab) According to a report from earlier this year, Phil Harrison, chief executive of Stadia, had sent an email to staff a week before the Stadia Games and Entertainment development studio closed, praising the “great progress” they were making.
